What you need….

  • Worsted Weight (#4):
    o Colour 1 for hooves / mane
    o Colour 2 for body/arms/legs/face/ears
    o Colour 3 for Unicorn Horn
  • Embroidery thread (black & white as well as whatever 2 colours you prefer for iris) and needle for eyes
    • Alternatively you can use safety eyes
  • Crochet Hook Size 4 mm
  • Stuffing
  • Tapestry Needle for sewing the pieces together

Crochet Pattern Abbreviations

chsp = chain space
sc = single crochet
hdc = double crochet
dc = double crochet

R2: * 2 sc in each chsp* repeat 6 times (12 sts)

Stuff arm (do not overstuff)
squeeze edges close and sc both sides together to close arm (6 sc)
Fasten off leaving a tail for stitching onto the body.

R1: Chain 10, slst into 1st chsp to make a circle,
R2: *sc into next chsp * repeat 10 times in the round (10 sts)

Sew Pieces Together

Sew the larger, bottom leg onto the body, onto both sides
– approx. 7th row from the bottom up
Sew the arms onto the body above the legs, onto both sides
– approx. 16th row from the bottom
Sew head onto the body
Sew ears onto the head, onto both sides
– approx. 17th row from the nose

** If you are embroidering the eyes onto the unicorn, jump to the
embroidery instructions first then add the horn**
If you are using safety eyes, you can sew horn onto the head, approximately centered of the head, equidistance of the ears and the eyes.

Adding Mane and Tail to Unicorn

To add a Mane: Hold one strand of yarn, 8” in length, and fold in half. Hold unicorn facing towards you. Use crochet hook to draw folded end through space or stitch. Pull loose ends through folded section.
Draw knot up firmly.

To add a Tail: Hold two strands of yarn , 8” in length, and fold in half. Hold unicorn facing towards you. Use crochet hook to draw folded end through space or stitch. Pull loose ends through folded section.
Draw knot up firmly.

Embroidering Eyes

With black thread, embroider the pupils onto the head of the unicorn onto rows: 11th from the tip of the nose and approximately ¾ inches apart from edge to edge. Use the satin stitch to fill in the pupil

With colour 1 for Iris, use the chain stitch and create a border around one side of the pupil and along the bottom (see photo description for more details)

With colour 2 for Iris, use the chain stitch again an border colour 1

With white, Use the chain stitch again and border colour 2, then add a simple stitch from the inside corner of each pupil to the center of the pupil.
